Derek Mackay
With a distinguished background in financial leadership and strategic reporting, Derek brings over 20 years of experience in both public and private markets. A Chartered Professional Accountant (Ontario) and Certified Public Accountant (Illinois), he holds an Honours Bachelor of Business Administration from Wilfrid Laurier University.
Prior to joining Novacap, Derek held progressively senior roles at Onex, most recently as Managing Director, Finance. In this capacity, he worked closely with the firm’s senior leadership and played a key role in supporting Onex’s strategy, investor communications, and board engagement.
Notably, Derek led the firm-wide transition to fair value reporting—reshaping internal and board-level reporting frameworks to align more closely with limited partner expectations.
Throughout his career, Derek has driven transformative initiatives, including the creation of an independent valuation function to support private equity teams, the development of a performance reporting infrastructure for LP communications, and the establishment of a financial planning and analysis function tailored to asset management. He also played a vital role in the fundraising of multiple private equity and continuation funds, the implementation of enterprise finance and business systems, and the integration of two acquired asset management platforms, including the subsequent spinout of one of the acquired platforms.
